Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour a 9-inch round cake pan or line it with parchment paper.
- In your large mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking soda, baking powder, and salt until well combined.
- Add the buttermilk, vegetable oil, eggs, and vanilla extract to the dry ingredients. Using an electric mixer on medium speed, beat for 2 minutes until the batter is smooth and well combined.
- Slowly pour in the hot water while mixing on low speed. The batter will be thin - this is normal.
- Pour the batter evenly into your prepared pan. Bake for 30-35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
- Allow the cake to cool in the pan for 10 minutes before transferring it to a wire rack to cool completely.
- While the cake cools, prepare the chocolate frosting. Beat the softened butter until creamy. Add the cocoa powder and mix until combined.
- Gradually add the powdered sugar, milk, and vanilla extract, beating until smooth and spreadable. Frost the cooled cake generously.
Notes
Measure accurately by spooning flour into measuring cups and leveling off. Ensure eggs and buttermilk are at room temperature for optimal mixing. Don't overmix the batter. Let the cake cool completely before frosting.
